GRCA Forester Ron Wu-Winter will talk about the Guelph Lake forest restoration project at this information session in the Oak Room at the Victoria Road Recreation Centre. The project will get underway in December on GRCA land southwest of the City of Guelph. His talk will include information about plantation restoration, a description of the work taking place over the next couple of winters and information about the impact on the recreational trails.
While forest operations are underway, the GRCA property east of Victoria Road close to the Speed River will be closed. A contractor will remove about 33 per cent of the trees in the area to speed the conversion of uniform forest plantations to more diverse and ecologically healthy forests. The goal is to restore the forest with a diversity of tree and shrub species of various ages and sizes. Some rows of plantation trees will be removed. Not only does forest thinning provide more room for the large trees to grow, but it also provides more sunlight and space for young trees and shrubs to establish. To increase diversity, hundreds of trees will be planted in the area next spring.
